Seoul - South Korea's ambitious climber Ko Mi Young fell to her death during the descent from Pakistan's 8,126-metre Nanga Parbat in the western Himalayas, according to South Korean media reports Monday. The 41-year-old Ko plunged into a ravine Sunday, The Korea Times reported, quoting the South Korean embassy in Pakistan, where the Earth's ninth highest mountain is located. Her body could not be recovered because of bad weather, The Kos travel agency Kolon Sport said.
Ko had dreamed of becoming the first woman to climb all 14 of Earth's 8,000-metre peaks. Next to the Austrian climber Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Ko was seen as one of the five most likely candidates to reach the goal, and had worked her way through 11, including Nanga Parbat right before her death, the Times reported.
Ko had gone missing for several hours. She had last been seen alive about 1 kilometre from the rocky slope at 6,200 metres, from where she fell into the ravine. Other climbers in her team witnessed the plunge. According to the team leader, Ko had been underway for 15 hours without sufficient rest periods. Bad weather threatened to block the descent. |
