ROME: Italian climber Achille Compagnoni, a member of the duo who were the first to conquer the world’s second highest mountain, K2, in 1954, has died at the age of 94.
Compagnoni died in a hospital in the northern city of Aosta on Tuesday night. He reached the peak of the 8,611-metre mountain in Pakistan on July 31, 1954, along with fellow Italian climber Lino Lacedelli.
K2 is the world’s second highest peak after Mount Everest, which stands at 8,848 metres, but considered far more difficult to climb, with a rate of deaths to successful summit attempts almost five times as high. |
